I've had a few highly eventful weeks, with brief moments of reprieve from the hustle and bustle. A week and a half in Seattle visiting my sweetheart, only to turn around and leave again for Illinois for a weekend to help out with A Night of Amazing Horses once I was safely on the ground in Wisconsin.
When I travel I always have an opportunity for deep introspection. Out of my normal element and comfort zone with a different routine, meeting new people and discovering new places. These are always my favorite times to write and create.
Naturally I spend a lot of time thinking about horses while I travel; not just my own horses but also those I work with and observe being handled and ridden.
What does any of this have to do with the horse's reflection of ourselves? When we're removed from the ‘daily grind' of habit it can open a new opportunity to see just how the horse is mirroring us.
We might experience the same problem with different horses. Or when traveling to new places experience new problems that arise because we're out of our element and that impacts the way we behave and interact with the horse.
And this opens the door for exploration into improving our skills as equestrians, and to face any personal blocks we're facing. Of course the horse is an excellent tool if we take the time to listen to his feedback. It isn't as direct as a friend coming to us and telling us to our face where we need to improve, but sometimes that kind of direct information is too bold and we put up defenses as a result.
