I can’t quite discern what he is doing with the whip and at that angle?
I often prefer to ride with the whip upright too, it allows you to completely disengage its use until you want to signal to the horse with it. Looks like he is just turning the wrist so the whip can be seen by the horse to indicate with it during the changes.
